Car Battery Replacement
What's something your car and TV remote have in common? They're both powered by batteries. When a battery is low or dies, you replace it. With a household appliance that's easy. But what should you do when your car battery is low? At our Service Center at Nissan of Mobile we are happy to provide car battery replacement services to drivers in Mobile, Prichard, and Saraland.
When to Replace Your Car Battery
The simple answer is that there is no definite lifespan for your car battery because so many things can affect it.
Some will last for over five years, while others need to be replaced after only three. How long it lasts has everything to do with how you drive and where you live.
Heat can shorten the lifespan of your battery. If you live in an area where the climate is warm all year, it will need to be replaced sooner. In cold weather a battery can last a lot longer.
The biggest thing that determines how long your battery lasts is your driving habits. If you almost never use your car or you only take short trips that last just a few minutes, your battery life is going to go down. Frequent use and taking drives longer than a half hour are good for your keeping your battery healthy.
Whether your battery has been in place for a few years or it's brand new, one way to drain it quickly is by leaving the electrical system on when the engine is off. Something like leaving the key partially turned in the ignition or leaving an interior light on overnight can completely drain your battery in a matter of hours.
Signs Your Car Battery is Low
When you think of a dead battery, the first thing that comes to mind is not being able to start your car. But there are some warning signs before it gets to that point.
If you try to start the car and the ignition takes longer to turn over or the crank sounds slower, that's a warning sign. Another thing to look for is if your lights aren't as bright. A problem with your electrical system can cause both your interior and exterior lights to appear faint.
Most vehicles also have some form of dashboard warning light that will either say CHECK ENGINE or look just like your battery.
Each of these could also mean that there's an issue with the connections in your electrical system or your alternator, but it's a good idea to get service right away regardless.
One way to make sure that your battery is the issue is to look at it. If it has any signs of damage like cracks or is leaking battery fluid, you'll know to get a replacement right away.
