Signs You Need an Oil Change
Routine maintenance and service jobs are a key part of keeping your car in top shape. Drivers in Prichard and Saraland can trust the service center at Nissan of Mobile to provide excellent service for your car, truck, or SUV.
Still, how do you know when you should schedule an appointment for some common maintenance procedures, like an oil change? What are some signs that you need an oil change?
Signs You Need an Oil Change
Fortunately, your vehicle will give you several clear signs. In most cars today, there's a dashboard light to let you know. It usually looks like an old-fashioned oil can with a drop coming out its spout.
If your vehicle doesn't have one of these, there's still plenty of ways to tell. Listen to your engine. If it sounds much louder, like it's working a lot harder than usual, then that's a good warning sign that you need an oil change.
Sometimes, you'll also be able to feel it. A clear sign that your engine has an issue is if you feel it vibrating while you're sitting in the driver's seat.
If you don't want to wait for either of those signs, you can check your levels at home. Just pop the hood, find the dipstick, and pull it out. Take a look at color and consistency and see if the levels are low.
Why Do I Need an Oil Change?
Every time you start your car, oil goes to work. Your engine is made up of moving parts that work hard to keep your car going.
All that work builds up a lot of heat, which can create friction. If the parts of your car aren't kept cool and properly lubricated, your engine could start overheating or your parts could be at risk of breaking down.
This is where oil comes in. It acts as both a lubricant and a way to cool down the parts of your engine. After some time, though, it needs to be refilled to keep working properly.
When it first goes in, it's a free-flowing golden-brown color. Eventually, it becomes a thick, black sludge after constantly working through your engine for a few months and a few thousand miles. This is why we regularly need to perform an oil change.
When Do You Need an Oil Change?
How often you need an oil change can vary, depending on what you drive. It's a good idea to check your owner's manual to see how frequently it recommends you head in for maintenance.
There are some general guidelines, though. Usually, it depends on whether your vehicle takes conventional or synthetic oil.
With conventional oil, it's typically recommended that you get maintenance every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, or every three months. This is usually what you'll find with most older cars.
Synthetic oil was engineered to be effective for longer. It's the standard in most new cars because it has fewer impurities, so you can go between 6,000 and 7,500 miles, or wait six months between maintenance.
